It is after the Tuesday Night Spotlight has ended. The ring announcer stands up.
Ring Announcer: Please welcome back, your NEW GWA World Champion, Anthony Caffrey!
Caffrey emerges, wearing a fresh gray suit and a black tie to go with it. He poses with the championship raised above his head before lowering the title onto his shoulder. He walks down the entrance ramp and poses with the fans for a selfie, making sure to get the belt in the selfie as well. He carries himself a bit happier than usual as he walks up the steps and into the ring.
Caffrey goes to speak but is blown away by the continued cheering. He holds up the championship one more time above his head, allowing for pictures as the cheering begins to die down. He turns to the announcer once the cheers finally die down.
Anthony Caffrey: I'm sorry, but I was all the way in the back and I missed it - could you do me a favor and repeat what you just said?
Ring Announcer: Please welcome back, your NEW GWA World Champion, Anthony Caffrey!
The crowd pops loudly again. Caffrey smiles.
Caffrey: Just...one more, please?
Ring Announcer: Please welcome back, your NEW GWA World Champion, Anthony Caffrey!
Caffrey's grin is at its fullest, the showman smile we've come to know over the years. He licks his lips before beginning to speak.
Caffrey: Thank you, and thank you, GWA Fans, especially those of you in the Caffrey Corner. It was a longggg time coming.
Caffrey: About two years ago I came down that ramp and made my debut in the GWA. And for the longest time, I got my ass kicked. Hobo Jack, Sue Rogers, Idol Austin, Rockshade, Nick Blade, Ace McCool, Tony Pride...all of those guys...all of those guys kicked the crap out of me at one point or another. Every Tuesday and Sunday night I got taken to school by these guys...and I had a failing grade, many, many times. But when I first signed my contract, I sat there at the desk and had a conversation with the guy who signed me.
Caffrey: I told him I had a goal. I wanted to be World Champion. I got laughed at. 'World Champion', they said, air blowing out of their mouths, 'yeah, and I want a million dollars.' And it wasn't...it wasn't supposed to be a reality. At least, that's what everyone thought. But I kept telling everybody, I'm gonna do it. I got my first shot at it - and Nick Blade crushed my collarbone. I sat out for at least a month, and I can't begin to tell you how lonely it is to sit in a hospital bed, that close to your dreams, that close to your goal, it was literally right there - and realize that you just didn't do it.
Caffrey: I won the Sadist's Challenge for my next title shot. I fought, I beat Ace McCool to a bloody pulp right there, and I was so confident. I thought it was mine, it had to be. And you know what happened? Sleepered out, center of the ring, out like a light at the hands of Rockshade. Woke up in the hospital again. That close.
Caffrey: Global Meltdown. I've never been more embarrassed to sit in a hospital bed.
Caffrey: These were my THREE shots, over TWO years. Two years of wrestling in this company, granted with a few months off, but two years of wrestling for three shots, three hospital beds. Three times, three times wondering if it'd ever happen. Whether I was making this gigantic mistake being a wrestler, throwing away IQ point after IQ point with my brain bouncing off the mat. Maybe I should've been a journalist or just gone into business or something. Maybe this dream was...stupid. Maybe it just wasn't supposed to be for me, you know?
Caffrey: I hate how cheesy this sounds but if it weren't for you guys embracing me, I wouldn't be in the GWA anymore. I wouldn't be here to entertain you, to put on a show, to do anything like that. I'd be at a desk - I'm not saying desk work is bad but I would've thrown this dream, this goal, away out in the trash. It took people like you - just average people on the street who'd come up and ask for an autograph, ask me how I was doing, when was I getting back in the ring, hey put me in the ankle lock for my cover photo, OH MY GOD IT'S ANTHONY CAFFREY LET'S TAKE A SELFIE, all of it! You!
Caffrey: The referee asks me every week if I have any corners and I don't. I don't align myself with those guys back there because I look out, and I don't just have a corner. I have the whole goddamn arena. I have the corner over there, I have row six, I have the guys in the twenty-buck seats, the kids with the "You Can't Shut Me Up" t-shirts, the ladies who somehow think I'm covered in sex appeal, I've got everybody in my corner. And damn sure no one's gonna stop us.
Caffrey rips off the suit jacket, the tie, and the dress shirt to a reveal a black-and-red "You Can't Stop Us" t-shirt. The crowd roars.
Caffrey: To my future competitors, come one, come all. You want this? You're going to have to put me back in one of those hospital beds, and I'm not going back anytime soon. I haven't spent two years working for this goal for some hotshot to come along and rip this championship out of my hands. You can try all you want. I will do whatever it takes to keep this championship, this dream. If I've fallen asleep, there's no way in hell you're waking me up. This is my goal, this is my dream, this is my World Championship. THIS. IS. MINE!
Anthony Caffrey screams the last line as he drops the microphone. The crowd is electric as he holds up the belt, staring into the camera. He slides out of the ring with it and walks out into the crowd of people, celebrating with them.
